Preparing for a visit to a foreign country can often be overwhelming, with no shortage of things to learn before you go. Where should you eat? Where should you stay? What do you tip? More so than this service information, though, is a sense of cultural understanding that’s hard to put your finger on. With this in mind, language learning app Babbel asked foreign ambassadors to the U.S. to pick the book they believe first-time visitors to their country should read before they arrive. „Wind of change“ – 9. November-Berliner Mauerfall

„Wind of Change“ is commonly associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall — but  it was actually inspired by events that took place well before the Wall started coming down in late 1989.

For nearly 30 years the Berlin Wall stood as a concrete manifestation of the Iron Curtain, preventing citizens in communist East Germany from fleeing to democratic, capitalist West Berlin. On the night of November 9, 1989, however, East German authorities suddenly opened the border crossing, and thousands of jubilant Germans celebrated by dancing on top of the wall and chipping away at it with hammers and chisels.

The Running Man is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Michael Glaser and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is based on the 1982 novel of the same name written by Stephen King.

The film’s story, set in a dystopian United States between 2017 and 2019, is about a television show called „The Running Man“, where convicted criminal „runners“ must escape death at the hands of professional killers.

On March 20, 1991, the nation of Sweden celebrated “All Storytellers Day.” Today, the day has been adopted around the globe as World Storytelling Day. From South Africa to Singapore, Canada to Croatia, thousands of people celebrate the art of oral storytelling.

Each year has a different theme—in 2015, it was “Wishes.” In 2016, it was „Strong Women.“ In 2017, it’s „Transformation“.f5051b68e12bf08b54823f579719d984
